Our History
Over the years, Shalom BP has seen many changes but God's grace has sustained us through difficult and good times.
Here are some notable events in the church’s history as we witness God’s provision throughout the years.
1976
Before Shalom was formed, God had already been laying the foundation for this new ministry. In 1976, Sembawang BP Church graciously seconded one of their full-time Bible college students, Tan Choon Seng, to Grace BP Church to serve as student pastor. And as Grace BP Church grew, its Session commissioned Pastor Tan and a small group of brothers and sisters to start a new church in Changi.
1981
On 6 September 1981, we held our first worship service – with just 22 adults and 4 children in St. George’s Chapel in Changi.
Shalom’s early years were difficult. The area around St George’s Chapel was sparsely populated, and church growth was slow despite outreach efforts further afield to Tampines. But by God’s grace, Shalomites persevered and continued to be faithful in worship and service.
1987
In 1987, God providentially led us to purchase a plot of land at Loyang Besar Close and construct our own church building. Shalomites gave sacrificially to support the building project, and our new home was completed in 1990.
1991
With the blessing of our new church building, we established Shalom Kindergarten to minister to children in the community, as well as their families. Shalom Kindergarten is still going strong today, and it is a certified SPARK pre-school education provider, with a mission to nurture young hearts, and enable children to flourish as lifelong learners and lovers of life.
2004
In 2004, as our church grew, we embarked on the second phase of the church building project, and constructed the extension you see on our premises today.
2019 to present
As we prepared a new generation of church leaders to take Shalom on the next lap of our journey, a team of leaders spent time searching the Scriptures and seeking God’s will for His church. We launched our new mission statement, which guides our ministry today – as we seek to help people follow Jesus and SURGE for Him everywhere.
